Posted this yesterday, but don't see it on the discussion board...so trying again...

I am looking to purchase a tractor to maintain 5 acres (heavy shredding), and an 800 foot long gravel driveway.

A fellow down the road has a 70's something David Brown 885G. It has 1500 original hours, new alternator, water pump, new high-back seat, and the carb has been rebuilt. All fluids flushed and gas tank cleaned out, fluids replaced. Paint is fair to good and no major rust anywhere on it.

The tractor appeals to me for several reasons: power steering, 2-stage clutch and plenty of HP to haul a 6' shredder in heavy field weeds/grass.

I can get the tractor with a brand new Bea Rice very heavy duty 6' shredder (channel iron sides, extra thick deck plate, 50 HP gearbox, and floating linkage) out the door for $4400.

Is this a decent deal for this tractor? Any chronic problems with the 885G? Anyhting I should expect to go wrong with this tractor? Any information would greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Sounds like the #'s are good. DB's are extremely good on hilly ground, they really hang on the hillsides in SW Penna.

Some parts are getting hard to get for the engine. But 1500 hours is pretty low for one of them. I may have manuals on the 885G if your interested. The price sounds like a deal to me with the mower included.
