Where can I buy a good oil for my tractor? I don't have an oil filter so I am told to use non-detergent oil. It will be run during modestly cool weather and warm weather. Should I just stick with some straight 30 weight? Also, how much oil does it hold? It is a 1942 Case VC w/ continentsl. Thanks,-Brad

Hi, I agree with Tom. The only engine I've converted to deterent oil is a neighbors flat head V/8 stake bed truck. We did it in the mid 80's (complete engine rebuild) and he still uses it in his brick, block & concrete business. Not everyday because he's semi-retired but still going with 10w-30. I think guys with the old car/trucks are faced with similar oil problems. Dennis.....

Thanks for the help guys, I went to wal-mart and got their house brand of oil and they had 6 quarts left so that should be good, big benefit, only 74 cents a quart. Thank again,-Brad

Hi Brad, Any decent brand of non detergent 30 weight oil should be fine for your VC. The reason non detergent oil is recomended for old engines is that it does not have detergent additives that can break down years of old old gunk that have built up in your engine, that may cause clogging of oil galleries and passages, and scoring of bearing surfaces and cylinder walls if they were to suddenly break free and start moving around in the engine. What I understand is that if your engine had been throughly hot tanked or cleaned as to where there was no buildup of contamanents, a modern detergent oil would be OK to use as there would not be any old deposits to loosen up. Makes sense to me...Wall Mart sells non detergent oil, as does Napa and many other auto parts stores. I am not sure of the capacity of the the VC, MY VAC has the Case engine and is equipped with a dipstick. Does the continental have a set of drains in the oil pan?? The continental in my Massy Harris has a dipstick. Good Luck.....Tom
