There is a plug just below the steering arm on my VAC. I assume that is where the hydraulic oil goes. Do I fill it up to the plug? Does it take hytran oil or something else. It is a later VAC with an Eagle Hitch on it.

Thanks for the help.

If it has an Eagle hitch it should be as I described. At least that's what the manual recommends. I'm no expert and maybe what you're doing will work fine and not damage anything. I'm just going by the owner's manual.
Best regards to you.

You've got it right, Carp. If I had a scanner, I'd send you page 22 of my operator's manual. The torque tube holds 8 quarts. Depending on the temperature, it says to use 20W engine oil for 60o and warmer, 10W for 32 to 60, and 5W for below 32. I just run 20W in mine, even when it gets colder. Once the tractor warms up it works just fine.

Thanks Les. Looks like I have a leak in the rear end. Is the rear end and the torque tube connected. If it only holds 8 quarts, then I doubt it. Sides, looks like 90 w that is leaking out from behind the brakes.

Ain't got time to check it out right now. If nobody has answered you when I get back from the fambly picanic, I'll look in the manual again and see what I can find out for ya. There's lots more smarter folks than me on this board and hopefully one of them will help you out before I get back.
My offer to get your $200 back still stands, BTW ";^)

You are first on a very long list of offers. After last night debocal, I might think about it.

Well, I'm just a bit confused. Should be a dipstick rod just to the left of the shifting lever on the top of the transmission. Manual says a VAC transmission and final drive capacity is 7 gallons and they recommend 90 weight.
I think I'm tellin you right. The torque tube thing has me confused. Must be they just don't mix. Can't imagine a rear end with 20 weight in it.
Can you get your hands on a manual?

Les, one of us is confused. As far as I understand, the torque tube transmits power from the engine to the rear dif. This bleeds back into the differential. Both the differential and the torque tube use 90 weight oil or there abouts (7 in the dif, 2 in the torque tube). The hydraulics are located on the belt pulley and have their own resevoir. It should use light weight oil, either 10w or hydraulic oil.
Hope I didn't make things more confusing

Yes, I'd say you have confused me. How does what you say jibe with the owner's manual? And with what Joe said?

Les, according to my owners manual 3rd edition page 18 90-140 weight in Torque tube (2 Gallons) and Transmission (7 Gallons). What I meant as far as the "bleeds into the tranmission" is similar to what Joe said about a bad input seal. My comments about the Hydraulic system come from page 52 of the owners manual. Perhaps the Hydrualic systems changed at some point or perhaps Case changed something down the line?

yep, there were some changes. one of you is talking about an eagle hitch tractor and the other a high pressure system on the belt pully. the manuels will read differently. eagle hitch uses the torque tube as a resevour and the belt pully modle has its own on the bottom side of the pully shaft housing where the pump is. that's neat, your both right!!

have fun guys. these are good little tractors.

I've been hoping you'd chime in, Wheat Straw. If youdda been around at the beginning of all this, it wouldda saved me a lot of head scratching. ";^)
My manual is the Operator's Instruction Manual, 6th Edition for Case Tractor, Model VA Series. It's the original one that came with the tractor new in 1952.

les,

About june or so in 49 was the first eagle hitch ( case 3 pt ) and that was only on the va series. In 52 the steering changed to the u joint steering with the steerig wheel set a little sidways instead of the drag link type steering. The hood also got a new latch. I hope to get the 52 wide front up and going this winter. It needs a lot of help. If I can find someone that knows something about these puetors to help me i'll post a picture.

Have fun with your Case's

Les, You got it right, the only way torque tube oil can leak into the transmission/final drive is via a failed seal on the input shaft. The trans dipstick is attached to a pipe plug on the shifter cover. The torque tube oil plug and level check are as you described. There should be an oil strainer mounted on the inside of the 3.0 oil return tube flange. I am using 80-90 in trans & gen purpose tractor hyd fluid in the torque tube. regards, Joe
