I posted a question back in Oct. 31 of 2005 regarding my Case CK 580 loader tractor.I think it is about 1970 vintage. It has a shuttle shift hydraulic transmission. There was a loud clunking noise for a a few days then the left wheel locked and would only turn a partial revolution back or forward. I finally drained the rear axle, took the back cover off and found that with the left back wheel jacked up it will turn about 1/3 revolution and stops either way. The big ring gear is held on with a large cotter pinned nut and I can't see what appears to be a small gear in front of the Big gear on the axle shaft. My question now is; can I remove the large nut and slide the left rear axle out to get a look at the small gear in front? I also wonder if I can replace the gear that has the broken tooth by pulling it out the back, assuming that is what is wrong. I would appreciate some advice on this. I'll thank you in advance.

It could be a broken gear, but are you sure it's not a broken bearing or bearing holder causing the gears to bind? Either way, you'll probably have to take it apart like you say.

You can pull the axle and take the bull gear out thru the top. Just did a R&R on my ring and pinion 1978 580B shuttle shift. Your bull gears are the easiest of all gears to change.

Is the large gear on the axle shaft the ring gear?
If so, the smaller gear hidden in front of the large gear must be the bull gear. I notice when I turn the axle the small gear will turn only half way around in either direction before it catches.

the small gear is called the pinion the large gear is the bull gear. The pinion is removed by pulling the brake cover off then the bearing housing. you need to get a book.

I know very little about such stuff, but my 580 did nearly the same thing. I found on mine the brake adjuster on the left side would tighten by itself while driving. It still does the same thing at times and I just loosen the adjuster a little and it's ok for a awhile. Might be worth taking a look before you tear into things.
