630crazy and I have been corresponding on this topic and we cannot come up with a better answer than to leave things as they are. The question is what needs to change on my 630 to convert from positive ground to negative ground other that the obvious? The tractor has been converted to a 12V alternator and is negative ground. I plan to go back to the Case generator to regain my tachometer function. None of the gauge cluster seemed to be working and it was in real bad shape. I am getting a reconditioned one from Rustyknuckles and don't want to damage it by hooking it up to a neagtive ground system. I can't see why it would if I followed a schematic for a 530 (negative ground).

What's the deal with positive gound? Ford used to do this years ago and I never understood the reason why.

All this depends on whether you have eletrical or maual gauges. If they are letrical they will have a sending unit that uses a wire to transmit the data to the gauge. now if you have two wires going to each gauge and one is grounded by the wire attached to it the all you need to do is swap the wires just like you did on the ampmeter. If they are internally grounded then you are out of luck and you must use the positive ground to make them work. All this can be tested by simply looking at the gauges.
The tack will also be the same see if it has two rires going to or one, if two then just swap them and it should work.

i'm not 100% sure why positive grounding was used...seem to remember reading it was thot to be safer...anyhow other than switching leads on ammeter and the actual grounds it all works the same...starter spins same direction no matter what polarity.
