Bought a SC the other day. A man started to restore but quit. Sheet metal including fenders done, mag. rebuilt, carb. rebuilt, head redone, manifold milled, lots of new parts. He started to put the rings in and broke one and gave up. I checked the bore by putting a new ring in the cylinder and the ring gap at the top is barely within specs, but would run fine. As you slide the ring to the bottom of the bore it just keeps getting smaller till there is no ring gap. There is 3 pistons in it and I can't turn it with a 4 foot 3/4 drive off the belt pulley. It turns untill the no. 2 & 3 piston starts down. Any ideas on how it got this way? They may have honed it to much, but the rings should have some end gap at the bottom..

Maybe you have rings for the bigger bore(3 5/8") and the sleaves are the stock bore.(3 1/2") Did you measure the pistons or sleaves to see which you have?

Does it have cast iron or aluminum pistons? I think the aluminum pistons are slightly larger. Perhaps you have cast iron pistons and the rings for the aluminum pistons?
