It's been a real learning experience in simplicity. I think todays engineers could learn a thing or two from yesterdays tractor builders. Two cans of PB Blaster into this project I have successfully loosened everything of importance and only broken I manifold stud and one grease zerk. I've got the steering loose and can now steer it while I pull it into the shop. I've got the throttle and spark advance levers loose, the carb removed and flapping, the magneto removed and loose but not clicking over yet. I've got the gas tank removed, and finally got the valve cover off. Valve springs are shot but the rocker arms look good. I'm afraid the valves will be borderline at best. The block down by the pushrods and the rocker arm train were completely covered with wild plum pits. They rusted the pushrods in two but the top round knobs that adjust are in good shape. I got all the manifold bolts loose until I got cocky about how good it was going and broke the last one off. The manifold needs 5 welds on the ears that are cracked. My good friend that's also a damm good mechanic is gonna bring the pressure washer over and we'll get the major crud on it washed off. Then it'll go in the shop and get the head pulled. I got to see in the inspection plates after I got the air washer off. The crank and con-rods look good, a light covering of oil on them. The crank is as big as a D-8 Cat's!!! It's just huge. I got the bypass pipe from the radiator to the head off and can see inside a bit and it's full of plum pits too! The carburetor had a couple dozen pits in it too. I spent all weekend loosening up the air-washer. Four bolts hold it in by two bands and three wing nuts hold the top on. I got everything loose and even found the missing sight glass inside, broken glass but still real usable. The drain pipe is full of dirt but that's easy once I get the plug out. It's the darndest air cleaner I've ever seen. All in all I'm making haste slowly. I've gotta save up some to get the manifold welded and some more to get the carb and magneto working. The head will tell the rest of the story. I'm hoping the pistons and sleeves are in good shape but I'm not betting the farm yet.

Anybody know how the pusrods looked in one piece? The bottom of mine are still in the block...

Sounds like you're making GREAT progress. I'll bet you may have found a pack rat's or squirrel's winter food storage area. I guess we just don't have a clue as to how versatile those old Cases are! (My $0.02 worth. jal-SD)

That's some pretty impressive progress, especially on one that old. There were two 12-20s that sold as a pair on ebay recently. I think it was in the last month, you may be able to get to it in Completed Items. You might be able to go to the seller, find the buyer, and pick up some extra parts. Just an idea, not many 12-20s in the salvage yards. The plum pits are funny from this far away, probably not to you. You ought to keep a list of every place you find them, could be interesting to display with the tractor when you are finished. Good luck.

I saved a jar full of the plum pits for asthetic reasons. A friend said I should put a sign on it saying "Nuts about my Tractor" or something to that effect. I got another piece of the mag advance linkage loose last night. That ol' PB stuff is amazing. I've had several things I thought were beyond hope, and a good dosing and a couple days in the 90 degree heat and they come right out. I've gotta get a manual soon and see what I'm missing on the final drive and what line goes where on the governor side. I found a picture last night in an Old Abe News and what I thought was a broken off bolt on the clutch is actually a grease cup. And what I thought was a breather on the trans is the dip-stick! Amazing old machine, just amazing. I'm even finding a little original paint here and there in the protected places...

Hey Baggsy,

With the addition of your plum pit story, it sure is an interesting week for bugs and/or animals living in our tractors.

Depending on how the restoration project goes- your sign saying "NUTS ABOUT MY TRACTOR" may change to "MY TRACTOR IS THE PITS!" Although it really sounds like things are going your way.

I really can't wait to see the thing! Maybe we'll all just have to get together and send a FedEx guy to the house to pick up your film rolls. (grin)

I like it!!! I'm hoping it'll be more like "Restoring this tractor WAS the pits" past tense and all.

If the 60+years of memory serve me well, that thing will bellow magnificently! I don't know what size the thresherman's crossmotor was but they didn't put the drinking water pail near the tractor! Good luck!
