I saw one today whose serial # started with 60 so I assume it's a '56.

The serial # system changed in late 1953. The VA series in late 53 started with serial # 5750001 and in 54 it started with 6011001 and in 55 6038001. 1955 was the last production year for any VA series tractor. CASEPOWER

Les, I'll check out some of my Case history books tonight when I get home. VAC's may have changed the "normal" way you can figure Case serial #'s the last two years they were built. I know I read some place that SC's & DC's didn't use the "subtract 4" method for some '53's and all '54's-those late models w/both brakes on the right side. All that I've seen w/ both brakes on right start w/80XXXXX. I've never seen an SC w/both brakes on the right & a hand clutch, but my BIL has a DC that way. The guy he bought it from said he bought it new the same year his son was born-1953. If "old timers" hasn't set in too badly, I THINK I remember reading they were made in batches, & nothing is consecutive for the last two years for both S's & D's-VA's may be the same. Get back to you tomorrow. (My $0.02 worth. jal-SD)

Guess I shouldda got the whole serial # and looked at it a little closer but I was kinda trespassin and didn't want to stir up anything like a ugly dog or whatever.
It looked pretty decent. Tires are all good and it looks like the owner has it rigged up to plow snow in his yard. That's prolly all the work the thing does.
This was in a place I don't have much reason to go so not sure when I'll be back by there again.

The stuff that I looked at gives the same info that CASEPOWER has indicated above. Mine also says that the 300 was manufactured @ the Rock Island plant, where the VA series had been made previously. (Another $0.02 worth. jal-SD)
