I have a 970 case and was wondering if all were made with jumpy clutches. When I let the clutch out the tractor always lurches forward no matter how slow you let the clutch out. Does it just meed adjustmet or what? Thanks in advance. DF

Sounds like the seal on C-2 piston has come out of the piston groove. Instead of a smooth engagement, the piston needs more volume of oil to get it to move, and then engages with a bang. Dad"s 970& my 1070 did it. These were the old style seal kits, the one with the wire that was inserted behind the seal.

First are you slowing engine to almost idle when you leave clutch out? Transmission is running in reverse if you hold clutch in fully even tho you dont have shifter in reverse. therfore you should slow or idle engine-release clutch short distance for split second as transmission changes its rotation than release fully an give necessary throtle for load at hand . Sounds complicated an long but is not. That way will save transmission clutches for you. If still jerky You need to adjust as John said. Case tractors do not need to be reved up to move off spot like some others.

You don't say whether you have a standard 8 speed or the Power Shift Tranny. Makes no difference anyways. When adjusted correctly, both types of clutches should be velvet smooth on take-off. Sometimes the P/Shift tranny can be jumpy on shifts, but that is after you're moving.

It's a powershift. but it was like that when i got it a year ago and forgot to ask the previous owner about it. How hard is it to adjust the clutch? Thanks. DF

On the P/Shift, it's not a matter of adjusting the clutch, it's a matter of adjusting the pressures. Somebody else has got to chime in for that. Are the linkages all free, not sticking?

I checked the linkages and they aren't sticking.

First thing would be to replace clutch modulating valve at the end of clutch spool in power shift control valve. Modulating valve consists of a poppet, couple springs and small spring separator washer.Cheap and easy to do by removing plug at bottom of cl spool. Broken bolts in powershift will also cause a jumpy clutch, but would also be accompanied by weak hyd"s in 2nd and 3rd range of powershift.
