We have a 310 tractor with power steering. Does anyone know how the valve is supposed to be set to activate the cylinder? A picture would be nice if someone has one. I do not think all of the parts are in the right order. There is a big flat washer on the end that bolts to the tie rod along with a 3/8ths washer on the bolt that goes through the spool. Is the 3/8ths nut supposed to be tight on the cylimder end? Thanks Jerry

Joe,
We are presently trying to repair a bendix 310 steering cylander that has a bent shaft. We cut it apart on a lathe and are looking for a 5/8 shaft to repair it. How did you do the Ford deal,or do you have any suggestions? We were thinking about an early car shock shaft and re-welding the seal end to the shaft and welding the tube back on. Bill

Bill, this cylinder was side mounted (parallel with the left side of the engine) on a Ford 700.

Except for the protruding shaft packing gland the cylinder external dimensions are the same as the one on the case 310. As a drop-in replacement, you need only swap the tierod end as the Ford one is not threaded for the steering arm nut.

As shown in my other pix, the cyl is off the Ford, the control valve is off the Case, the actuator is a mix of the best parts out of each, and the tierod end is off the Case.

Internally the Ford control valve is machined for wider seals so a seal kit from Case will not fit. The cyl is welded like the Case, shaft is 5/8", same stroke and fitment at the bracket end, don't know what type internal seals.

Do you have the original Bendix cyl similar to this one in the pix? I made this one up from parts of the original Case 310 cyl and a later cyl off a Ford tractor.

Looking at the worn parts that I have left, the spool stud is 5/16" so I am not sure if we are addressing the same cyl but if so the small washer is the spacer between the spool and the adjuster nut that screws into the inner sleeve of the actuator. As installed the small washer is inside the larger washer and moves with the spool while the large washer is stationary against the valve body holding the seal & seal bushing in place.

When assembled the nut is drawn up tight. If the spool stud turns preventing the nut from being tightened, then the stop pin in the adjuster nut is broken or missing.

There are 3-4 pages in the service manual that has assembly instructions but my manuals are loaned out. The borrower said he would mail the manuals back on Mon so I should have them later next week. Will mail copy of pages or can possibly scan and e:mail pertinent pages if you still need them, send e:mail.

Joe

Joe,
Just won a bid for a 310 owners and service manual on ebay. (hope there not yours) If info is in there I can look it up. We have a machinist friend who is going to try to straighten the shaft on a press. We'll see what happens.
