We just picked up a tractor in need of TLC. Thanks to teh input of a few guys (thanks Butch!!), I think I have correctly figured it to be a VAI. It's missing the ID tag on the dash. It's got VT207 stamped on the torque tube cover, where the shifter is. The gauges are mounted on a flat vertical dash panel. There is a splined shaft on the left side of the transmission that operates a link arm for the steering. The steering linkages and entire front end, axle and all, are missing, as is the right rear tire and rim. The tractor has an aftermarket loader on it, run by a crankshafted-mounted hydraulic pump.

As mentioned, I'm pretty sure this is a VAI, but I would like to have some clues regarding its year and possibly serial number. On the engine block, where is the engine model number stamped? Is there any serial number info besides what was original ID tag? We plan on, as a minimum, getting the thing to be operational again.

Also, we have a 1370. I have completely torn the engine down on, due to an engine knock. I have to replace the crankshaft, connecting rod, and will completely overhaul the engine. Where on the block is the casting number stamped? Also, some folks have asked for the crankshaft casting number. Where on the crankshaft would this number be stamped?

Thanks much in advance.

Also -how were the rest of the rod brgs. and were the mains wore relatively even or not-- all the wear patterns tell a story

The wear patterns for both the mains and the rods were even wear across all bearings, except for #3 rod, which one half had spun over on top of the other. I believe that it was just a matter of time before one of the bearings became so worn that it did this, and perhaps the previous owner (not me!) ran it for a while with the engine knock, which eventually wore away so much material tha the crankshaft is unsalvageable. It is also possible that one of the injectors was stuck open, which would allow excess fuel to eventually get into the oil.

As mentioned, the crankshaft is un-salvageable, except for perhaps a special welding process that a gentleman has emailed me about. I plan on just replacing it, as the finances dictate that this is the best option.

What is this balancing the connecting rods thing? Is it a process of balancing the weights of the rods, so that they produce less vibration while running (like balancing a disk)?

Kind-of !! Ever ask yourself -why that rod -why not the one beside it-or the one at the other end of the engine- I believe I have some of the answers .I'll tell you how to go about it by mail
