Brad,

The spark is generated when the ground wire is disconnected.

Hook the battery wire to the hot side and connect the distributor side of the coil to ground. The completed circuit allows the coil to charge. When the distributor wire is disconnected a spark should be discharged from the large coil wire that goes to the distriburtor cap. Position the large coil wire so there is a gap between its end and the ground.

It doesn't need to be in the tractor to to this. I've done it on a workbench with a battery.

If you are running a 6 volt sytsem, then you most likely won't need a resistor. If the tractor has been converted to 12V, and a 6 volt coil is still used, you should use a resistor. If not plan on replacing the points about every 50 to 100 hours. The higher voltage arcing will pit the contacts quickly.
