Polarity at the starter

Do not attempt to resolve the ground polarity by using the connection to the starter. To reverse the rotation of a DC motor you must reverse the current direction in either the field or the armature but not both. A starter is internally connected so that reversing the polarity at the terminal reverses both the field and the armature so that the rotation is unchanged. Years ago a neighbor built a go-cart for his son and powered it by two starters. He attached a wheel to each starter, mounted them on opposite sides of the rear of the wooden frame. He thought by wiring one with reverse polarity he could get it to turn the opposite way. The first time his son applied power both motors turned the same way and he did at least a 720 before he could release the switch. In a permanent magnet DC motor the field has a built in polarity and changing the polarity of the armature current will change the direction of rotation. The generator is a different story. Since it rotates the same way and the field and the armature are wired separately, the polarity can be changed. An alternator is an AC device that delivers DC through several solid state diodes and as such the polarity of the output is dictated by the polarity of the diodes. Hope this brief explanation helps.

I saw a winch once powered by a starter motor, looked factory made. It would run in either rotation. Looked like the brush end cap rotated 180 to change direction. Dennis.....
