Seeing the dust fly in wyo. Got me to thinking what was the earlist that Dad start"ed planting? (4/1/64 oats)3 weeks early. Now I know that that most states have a different "growing season" so my question is what is the earlist you have started planting?

Last year I planted mixed grain on March 25, under seeded with hay. This year in southeren Ontario is very different, maybe April 25. Latest I ever planted grain was 24th of May, and on a low wet field. Turned out to be a very dry year, my early ground dried out and that wet late field had a great crop. The date you plant don't mean as much as the amount of rain that falls after will. Bruce

In this area snow on top of freshly planted oats was called "poor man's fertilizer" as it seemed to really perk up the new seeding. The earliest I ever disked corn stalks was Feb 28th and the earliest oats/alfalfa was planted was Mar 30. NE WI Not the end of the world, but you can see it from here LOL. Don

Used to say around here (SW PA) "Plant oats when the service berry blooms, corn when the dogwood blows." Most do earlier than that now.

Our neighbor always said plant Oats on Valentines Day. Well we were two weeks late in 1969, planted around the 1st of March. Planted 300 ac. and 80 of it was planted in a snowstorm. Made 80 bu. per ac. Had to put 20000 bu. of the 24000 bu. on the ground. Covered it with plastic and sold to the Gov. the next spring for a dollar a bu. market price 60 cents.

I planted oats in western Illinois on Feb. 28, either late sixty's or early seventy's, can't remember for sure. Ground worked like a garden and they made 80 bu./acre. Best oat crop I ever raised. Didn't have enough storage so had to haul several loads to the elevator.

Gregg I think 64 was the only year my Dad planted corn in April, it was durring the last week. If I remember correctly that was the year it froze late also. I remember Dad and Grandpa had to replant all the corn.

Rod, I'am sorry I forget where you live? I was from wis. I also remember that some of the guys around us planted corn too. They also ended up replanting too. I remember it was about a week after Dad planted the oats we got about an inch of snow!!! Grand-dad said "that will be the best crop of oats we will ever have" and he was right!!. that old pull-behind case 77 combine was just ah pump'en the oats into the bin. We lived 35 miles due west of milwaukee.
