I have a top-link selective draft sensing unit disassembled, and I am having trouble seeing how the light/medium/heavy selector works.

The sensing is done by a Bowden cable that follows changes in the length of the springs, I see that.

What I don't see is how the strength or stiffness of the assembly is changed merely by rotating the carrier between the springs.

Is there supposed to be an angled thrusting element in the assembly somewhere ? Or is it done with a step-dowel of some kind ?

Also, what is the standard free length of the springs ? The whole assembly seemed kind of loose before I even took it apart.
