Hi guys. I've been bitten by the pulling bug and would like to get more out of my DC3. It's a strong runner in the stock antique 5500 lb. class but it needs more for first place. I'm running 15.5 x 38 and 40 hp with engine set at maximum rpm of 1500 and 47 hp if I crank it up to 1700. Any cheap ideas on getting more torque out of it? I don't know the bore diameter, but it has the high compression head. I thought about advancing the cam. Has anyone tried this? Any other ideas would be appreciated!

TWO WORDS BALANCE AND TRACTION ARE THE KEY. NEVER RUN OUT OF POWER BUT ALWAYS SPIN-OUT!!
MASTER THEM FIRST

You"re right. I spun out and it felt like she had a little left. I don"t know if she had another 9 feet in order to get first place. I"m looking at adding some weight to the front (5-10 pounds) and later down the road purchasing another drawbar support and cutting and shortening it. Most classes I pull in must maintain a drawbar otherwise I would just make a plate and fasten it to the bottom of the rearend. I"ve already tucked the drawbar under the tractor so it"s even with the end of the stock drawbar support. I also run a hitching plate that puts me at the maximum of 18" high. Thanks for your accurate correspondence.

depends how much hp you want. I have a 331inch CC at around 80 hp, am going to stroke it this winter. for 50-60 hp get some M&W pistons, Berry Cam, head and carb work. If you mess with cam timing get a degree wheel and get/make an offset key, one tooth is too much, I personally have not messed with cam timing. Those engines run good with higher comp. and 20 to 30% over stock rpms.

Post a message for Casepower. He wrote an article in this month's Old Abe News on building a DC pulling engine. Most of the modifications are expensive, but he may have some less expensive suggestions.

Are you running a MAG or a Distubitor? I switched my SC to a Distubitor and it LOUGs better! Starts Better and is a nicer running tractor and it may help yours!

When I was kid my stepdad had me advance my timing chain on my 46 Pontiac straigt 8 by two notches. I can't tell if it did any good but it did seem to burn more rubber. Th mileage was till bad though 8 MPG.
