Problems with the L

I finally got it to the point that I could try and start it. Sadly, I don't have a belt, another tractor or a pulley (on the L) to make my life easy. So 2 questions:

1. It will only pop once in a while when I crank. It doesn't seem to matter where the timing (adv/ret lever) is, and the choke seems to only make a very slight difference. I see the puffs of smoke coming out of the exhaust when cranking, but rarely does it pop. When it does pop, it will only pop once, never giving me hope of running (like two pops would). I have timed it the best I could, but figure it is still a little off, but I figure I should get at least 2 pops out of it. Any ideas?

Secondly, is there a fix for making my arms the same length like they used to be? It seems that after cranking it with my right it has stretched at least 4 inches. (lol)

Put tracot in high gear and then pull it with another tractor not your good pickup as you don't know if the clutch will release or the brakes will work the pull it slow until it starts. I am sure though that the timing is off it sound like 180 but it only needs to be off a small amount to not start.

On my Case LA (same engine) I find top dead center compression on Number 1 then put a mark on the crank pulley and the engine block to mark this. Then turn engine backwards and mark it about 1.5 inches from first mark. Then set advance to full. this 30 degrees BTDC. now set yoyr mag to this point to fire. when you ghet it running you can then use a timing light to check your timing using the same mark and with advance full on.

Maybe pull start it? Get someone with a pickup and a LONG tow strap. That should turn it over fast enough to get it going.

Check the timing carefully, it may be firing on the exhaust stroke.

On my L, when the timing is right and the carb is right, it always starts on the second pull (first one to suck the mixture in to the engine)

I doubt that you can start an L by towing it. Too much gear-up in the transmission, although I admit I never tried it. You can, however get a rope and wind it around the belt pulley, block the tractor well, hitch the rope to your trailer hitch, engage the clutch being SURE that tractor is in neutral, and drive away. when you come back the tractor should be running. I had a cousin that did this all the time as he was afraid of the crank. Now that I"ve invited all sorts of repercussions about safety and sanity. Check the timing. These things start easily when everything is correct. It sounds like the mag is a turn out.

I've pull started my L with no problems. Like was said below, if you have someone competent assisting you, you should have no problem starting it that way.

The man stated that his L did not have a belt pulley!! If he has assistance , there is no reason hecan't pull start it.

Thanks for bringing it up. I didn't want to seem like a jerk for saying, duh I already mentioned that xyz wouldn't work.

I would love to pull start, but I don't have the area to do it, given that it has steel wheel with spikes (and the city wouldn't want me any where near their road).

I went through it slowly and they seem to be sparking at the right point, but I will check again. I was hoping it was something simple (but is it ever?).
