Hello: I need help identifing my tractor. My son says it is a Case model 420. I think it is gasoline fueled. He says it is from the 1960's. I am in Oregon and the tractor is in Idaho. When I was last there, I found the two following Model Numbers. 4017385 (metal plate located by the clutch area) & 6120288 (metal plate located by the steering wheel). At this point, we have three questions: 1.) Do we need to use a lead addative for the gasoling, and if so how much addative for a 10 gallon mix. 2.) What type of oil filter and then what type of oil and how much oil for an oil change. 3.) Is a manual available for this tractor and how much would one cost. Thanks ever so much, Brian

Your tractor is the 288th unit built in 1959.
It does not require a lead additive.
The Case filter number is either VT3569 or VT3589; it does not show up clearly in the online parts book at CNH.com
By the way, if you use the online book it's under 400B diesel. Once you open the book, simply scroll down and watch for parts labeled spark ignition.
As far as a manual, I suggest you contact a CaseNH dealer as they are usually cheaper than the after- market company and the quality seems to eb better too.

Thanks for that super fast response to my questions, Tom. I really appreciate that. One more question: Were you able to use the two model numbers 4017385 (by clutch) and 6120288 (by steering wheel)? Again, thanks so very much, Brian

The serial number is 6120288, the one by the steering wheel.

Hi Tom: We would like to know what type of oil the motor uses and how much for an oil change. (i.e. would 30 W work and how many quarts for the oil change.)

Brian:
Unfortunately, I can't give a definite answer to those 2 questions as my Cases are all older models.
Most of my manuals recommend SAE 30 for summer use and SAE 20 for winter.
I would guess that it would not take over 5 quarts; all I could recommend is ad oil until it reaches the full mark on the dipstick.
By the way, I looked in the text section of the parts book and the filter number is VT3589; I just checked my Valubilt catalog, but there are several different filters listed and I can't tell which one might fit your tractor.
