I got the brakes and stuff on the VAC fixed and fit for a trial out on the black top road. (The VAC has quite a road gear don't it?) I didn't go too fast nor too far, the front wheels wobbled side to side a WHOLE lot, even at just moderate speed. This is a two wheel narrow front. I looked through the parts list over on Skipjack's page and all I can figure is the key at the bottom of the shaft is buggerd or the splines that hook into the gear at the top of the shaft is wollered out.
I can move the wheels side to side by hand just sitting still wheels on the ground. Did I miss something obvious before I dig into this pretty big project?
Thanks in advance

Yall ain't gonna believe this. O.K. In the service manual it says to jack up the front of the tractor when you put the worm gear back in and tighten it down with the wheels off the ground. I did it with the wheels ON the ground. It wouldn't tighten up all the way like that. So when I jacked it up and did it like the manual said, it worked great. The wobble is all but gone and (surprisingly enough)the steering is really super smooth as of now. I figured out that if you are going to USE a service manual, you may as well follow the instructions.

my bad, I missed the 52 VAC in the subject. I'd suspect the gear box is wore or needs adjusting.

I guess I should re read more often.

Just Asking, but when You put Your worm gear back in did You adjust it? You can rotate the inner casting and move the worm closer to the pedestal gear to remove as much slack as possible. Good Luck.

I saw where a body adjusted that worm case with a special tool, can you do it without that tool? It looked like you just kindof rotate it counter clockwise one click at a time, right?

A 52 VAC has the gears in the front. I would try to hold the shaft going to the back still and move the tires side to side and see how much movement you have in the steering gear box. You may have bearings out.

When the wheels move side to side, does the rest of the steering gear move as if you were turning the wheel slightly side to side also? Or does the steering arm start moving while turning before the wheels will turn (if that makes any sense)? My VAC has a two piece pedestal. The splines an or key could be bad.
on a side note, as Jerry W said the earlier VAC's (mine's a '48) has a bushing at the top of the pedestal. Mine was almost worn out and the shaft was wore badly. I was able to build it back up with "JB WELD" and ground/sanded it smooth and as true as i could. installed a new bushing and works great 2 years later.

Mike, the wheels move before the steering linkage does. Going down the road, the front wheels wobbled and the steering wheel never moved. Also, it didn't feel like it was "hitting" on the steering wheel either, just wobbled. Once stationary, the wheels still wobbled, but I could see the worm was moving some also. I hope it is a bearing and not the gears, I imagine the bearing would be a bit cheaper to fix!

It has got to be either wheel bearings or the bushing/bearing at the top of the steering pedestal is junk. I believe early one had a bushing and later used timken.

This one has the newer 2 piece pedistal. The casting and the shaft that goes through it. It does have the roller bearings as well. When I shake the wheels side to side sitting still, the shaft from the steering wheel don't move, just the front wheels. I had the worm gear out last week, and it looked brand new, it surprised me how new it was. I didn't check the gear tho, nor the splines when I had it apart, a bad move apparently.
So tomorrow I will dig into it and see how things look. Thanks for the responses yall. Looks like it is get greasy time again.
