The tag on the Case DE engine I bought at the auction at Santa Claus IN has serial number 5508720 on the tag. Am I correct in thinking it was built in 1951? I hope to use this as the replacement engine in my D.
Thanks in advance,
Ben

Ben,

I put a DE engone in my D. I did have to change front front pulley and Also think I had to change flywheel and seemed like there was a plug in the crankshaft that you needed to remove and put in the little valve to oil the clutch. Been a few years, but over all was easy switch. I also removed the side inspection plates and cleaned up the pan inside.

My 53 DC has a DE engine on it. It definitely has that snapper governor and more rpm. It cranks out a solid 50hp on the dyno too. I understand the D is for the series, but what is the E designation?

The "E" would be for engine unit. SE, DE, etc.

"EX" would be the export model.

Thanks for the information everyone. My son and I might try to perform the switch this weekend. I guess I don't understand what needs changed to oil the clutch. Is it inside the clutch housing? Also can I measure the crank pulley or check for casting numbers to see if they are the same?

You can tell the difference in the front pulleys. The D series have wet clutch which gets it supply from engine through the crank. The combine egine does not have a wet clutch and the end of the crank may have a plug in it. Once you have your old engine off you can see what I'm referring to. I can check and see if I took pictures.

I checked the pulley tonight. It will have to be changed. I got the drive off but still have to take the housing and flywheel off. I might have to delay the project, if the ground dries enough I have to get our corn and beans planted and the hay is not very far behind.
Thanks again,
Ben C.
