Does anyone know if the battery operated pre-heater, in the manifold of a 700 diesel, fits in the same hole that is used for the ether injection? I have the fitting in the manifold for the ether injection (pinched off by previous owner) and would like to switch to the battery operated pre-heater, I think, if they work, it definately needs something, it starts hard cold. Any information/tips would be great.
Thanks,
Kurt

On a loose engine poor injectors will often help starting as the excess fuel helps seal compression,a good injector will help considering the rest of the engine is good in regard to cyl. wear and valve seal, as usual Gene is offering his misinformed assistance!!

Whoever you are, I challenge your remarks. There is no improvement whatsoever with running a malfunctioning injector. I have owned my 700 for 36 years and when it begins to start hard, I pull and clean and lap the injectors and it starts and runs much better and smoother.

The advice I offer here is from many years of working on and with tractors. I am proud to sign my name to all posts I make here. There may be times I have made errors, but on this subject thread I will stand firmly on both feet with the advice I have offerd.

Kurt;
Most common cause of hard starting is dirty or worn injectors. These can be removed and cleaned or new tips installed. Adjust cracking pressure to 2500 to 2700 PSI. The original ether starting aid used a jel capsule inserted in the plunger. It is difficult or impossible to find the capsules.

I discarded my ether system many years ago. When I need ether, I just give a very little puff in the air cleaner.

Cranking speed is also very critical. One battery will not spin the engine fast enough when cold to start. Best setup is 2 group 24F batteries in parallel in place of the 2 six volt batteries in series. Must have at least 0 gauge cables to carry the load... Gene

Thanks! I have good batteries and big cables, but have suspected the injectors are worn/dirty. It"s been sitting for quite a while so I wanted to try to run it some before pulling the injectors.
Thanks!

Kurt;
The injectors can cause other problems as well. With a poor spray pattern the injectors will cause erosion of the power cell nozzles.

I just bought a pair of heads from a 800 and the spray pattern had ruined 3 out of the 4 power cells. Fortunately, I have enough good cells to use in these heads. I will be rebuilding my 700 this fall or winter and want a set ready to bolt on... Gene

Hi Kurt,

The previous owner of my 700 did just that. The ether line and fitting still dangles right underneath the heater element. Mine doesn't work any more - just one more part to be fixed during my restoration.
