Hey Don,

Ran across this book on eBay and it reminded me of you.

Did you ever do anything with the list of J.I. Case dealerships that you were gathering awhile back?

Don:
i posted about 6 months ago, looking for a 1940's Coffeyville Kansas Case dealership, and am still on the search...

but i ran into the following names:

Isham's Hardware in Coffeyville sold Case Implements in the 40's and 50's, but i don't know about tractors...it wasn't listed on the ad i saw!

Orville W. Carter, Inc., Coffeyville also sold "many makes of farm equipment".

Standard Motor Service, La Cygne, Kansas sold "J.I. Case Farm Machinery".

sign me "still looking"

rick

Mike, Good to see you are back! The book is a work in progress. Every chance I get I investigate old Case dealerships and interview old owners. Unfortunately, they are getting up there in years as many (or most) of them were cancelled in the mid to late 60's and continued on as a short line dealer or switched to Oliver or International in many cases. It is getting to be incredibly hard to get accurate information as too much time has passed. For example, on a recent trip to the Gulf Coast of Alabama, I tried to find out who the Case dealer was in that area. I searched for a day and a half to find anyone who may have known the identity of the dealer and the location. The closest I got was there was one in Foley, AL until the early 60's, but nobody can remember the exact location or name.

This is getting to be long winded. Here is my plan: I am going to retire in a year and a half from my full time plus business and then I can just farm and write this book (and restore old Case tractors, of course). In the early 50's Case had somewhere around 4000 dealers, 1 every 7-10 miles on average-sometimes closer. There just doesn't seem to be any way to find them all. That means I have to narrow the scope of the book to a select few that have extensive information still available. By the way, my wife thinks I'm nuts. Thanks for asking, Don

Hello Don,

Do you have a dealership listed in Fairfield, Nebraska?

I purchased some Case papers on eBay awhile back and one is a Sales Contract to a Warren M. Wilson. The contract is dated February, 1936 and shows a CC-3 tractor, a plow, Lister cultivator and a Dealer Sign.

Ps: Yes Mike it is Great to have you posting again, you were missed!

Dave,
I do not have that name, I'll add it to my list. It is interesting to note that you didn't have to have much to be a Case dealer in the 30's and 40's. Case had Branch Houses everywhere with parts and machinery within about 100 miles of most dealers. This particular gentleman could have been a farmer, or blacksmith, or hardware dealer and just sold a little Case machinery on the side.
I hope to attend your show, but I don't know if I can afford the gas to bring a tractor down. Don

Count me in for a copy of your boook when you're done.

Had you seen the book that I linked to before?

Mike,
Yep, I do have a copy and I thought it was OK, but not great. I wanted to see if it would overlap what I want to do and it doesn't at all. You may not know it, but there were some very interesting internal struggles within Case company and its dealers bore some of the brunt of that, along with the changing technology that we call "progress". It is interesting to note that of all the people I attempted to talk to only 1 person absolutely refused to cooperate and hung up the phone. Many old dealers have a tremendous grudge against Case company-sometimes justifiable and sometimes not-but these old guys are CASE men and always will be. Most can't believe that anybody is interested and the stories they have are incredible. Don

Mark me down for a copy, too. We had a dealership in Oskaloosa, Iowa, and I know a feller that worked for them. I'll try and find out some more information for you. Irv*
