Hey all--my dad is looking for a tractor to replace our 4840 John Deere and it needs to fill the following roles:

Number one is running our twin hay merger. Minimum HP requirement for it is 100 HP but we pull alot of hills and want something that could handle a triple-pickup merger if need be--HP requirement for that is 130 HP
THE TRACTOR MUST HAVE HYDRAULICS THAT HAVE A 'FLOAT' POSITION! Our Case 1370 doesn't, the 4840 does. The 4840 is a bit oversized for what we're using it for.

Running a round baler.

Light Tillage--Disking with a 12' or so disk.

And some other additional, smaller stuff (TMR perhaps)

What I was wondering is, can we get into something that would fill these roles, has MFWD, and won't constantly be breaking down, for under $30,000 or is that just wishful thinking?

My uncle is running a 5250 Case IH that is turned up to 130-150 HP and that seems to be something that we could do as well, and keep the cost down, but I was wondering if that much power going through a 115 HP tractor from the factory will just tear the heck out of the transmission and PTO. Does anyone have experience with this? We won't be doing any heavy pulling with it, and no heavy PTO work to speak of, but will these tractors take that kind of HP without killing themselves?

Also, I was looking at the Case 2294 and 2096. Do either of these tractors have the Float position on the hydraulics? Is the motor on the 2294 Case, while the 2096 is the 5.9 Cummins? How is the fuel efficiency of these motors? How would they compare to a new tractor, as far as fuel efficiency?

Thanks guys!

Both tractors have a float position, 2294 has a 504 Case engine and the 2096 has the 5.9 Cummins.I had a 2390 Case and replaced it with an RT 130 Agco, the RT also has the 5.9 Cummins. The 2390 in lighter conditions would run on 2 Gal/hr less fuel than the RT and still have more than enough power. The 2390 had 185 hp and the RT has 130.

Was the 94 series the first Cases series with the float position? I was looking at a 2290 that did not have the 'float' . . . How is the 504 on fuel? Is that the same motor that they put in a 1370? Are the 2294 or 2096 more 'robust' than a CIH 5250 Maxxum? How big of problem is the electronic powershift on the 2294? I hear that repairs to the powershift can exceed the value of the tractor . . .
