General clutch question

Finally got to taking the clutch off the old 730 block. The clutch is a 4 spoke style with about a 2x2inch friction pad on each spoke. In the parts book I see this is one of 2 used on the 730's. The other is a full circular disk with fiction all the way around. This is what I've seen before and figured this tractor had. Why the 4 spoke design? It seems like more friction surface the better. I probably need to renew the friction since its apart, should I switch to the full style? thanks.

The spoke type discs are grabby, good for heavy pulling but bad if you are running a baler and are trying to feather the clutch through a big slug. The spoke ones are harder on the flywheel, also. If I had it to do over again in my 400, I'd get the full disc.

What Tom is telling you is correct. While your down there. Change the throw out bearing for sure. You never know when an old one will go out. If you think yours is ok. Change it anyway and keep old one in some oil or lubicated up good for and extra.

There is a regular (fiber) clutch that you have seen in the past and a metallic (heavy duty) that is in your tractor. You can use both. It's better to use a fiber clutch if you have a loader on the tractor. Take a good look at the flywheel because a matallic clutch will eat flywheels.

thanks. How much wear is too much on the flywheel? There is some definate grooving (like a well worn disk brake). How much can be turned out? How thick are the clutch pads (friction) when they"re new? thanks again.

The clutch cover should be flat to within .015" or should be replaced. However, a lot of people have them machined. The flywheel should be machined anyway and .035" to .050" would not be a problem. I don't know what the max would be. I would go with the fiber or regular clutch. I don't know what a new clutch disk measures.
