VAO I just bought does not have an external oil filter. Is this the norm for CASE? Is there something internal? Also no muffler just a oblong flange off of the exhaust manifold.

On many of the old tractors an oil filter was an option and back then money was tight so a lot of people did not pay the extra $$ for a filter

The VAC-SC-DC-LA-300-350-400-500-600-700-800-900 tractors had bypass filtration. Its O.K. but you can do just as well to change the oil when it gets dirty. Case tractors from 1960 on had full flow filtration that filter all oil aftger it left the pump before entering the engine lubrication.

Back in the days when that tractor was built According to Leon Clausen , CEO of J.I. Case.. "Case engines are built to such SUPREME specs that it is not necessry to filter the engine Oil ",,.., There were a lot of things that guy was wrong about , AND it was little wonder he did not wreck Case company into bankruptcy during his tenure as CEO , If tractor were mine and I planned on working the tractor I would get a filter off of a Late DC , SC, VAC,,Or even a 430 .. however If All You will Do is Show and Parade , I would certainly leave it as is ,, And Get a Copy Of FULL STEAM AHEAD , History of Case, to explain Clausen's positions , Best regards , Jim

Just change the oil once in a while!!! I Have a 45 SC that still gets worked hard and has NEVER had a filter on it. And in those 65 years it has been overhauled once and when it was done we put the .003 undersize bearings in as the crank did"nt even need turning. I dont know why some of you think an engine HAS TO HAVE A FILTER it dos"nt. All it needs is good oil an clean air.

So no oil filter because of the orchard sheet metal? There is a cover plate behind the distributer where you indicated the filter would go.

Most had a spin on oil filter .Next to the distributor, towards rear, should be a small plate, aprox 1" x 3" held on by two bolts, this is where the oilfilter base would (or could) go, I have a couple vac parts tractors with them ,Ive seem them on e-bay also,I think Wisconsin V-4 used the same base. The "oblong flange" was an orchard only thing, Someone had one of those flanges on e-bay about a month ago and had it incorrectly listed as a cooling system elbow....it brought $170
