Hi Thanks in advance. Case 580 Gas 1970.
Been offered above tractor (just haul it away after 4 years in the trees) Not running when put there so may just be scrap iron. (Still has hoe&loader)Spent hours the last couple of days trying to find out what engine this is. Seems like maybe 188 gas. If so engine rebuild kits/parts etc available for diesel but not gas anymore? Did Case use this engine in any ag equipment? OR could I replace it with a 188D somehow. Or should I just leave it where it is?

 580 engines in reply to C., 04-20-2008 22:17:09
The 580 gasoline engine from the factory is 159 CID, and parts are available from dealers or after-market. The 159 gasoline engine (43 HP rating) is also found in the 530 agricultural tractors. There was a 188 gasoline engine, but it was only available in the 630 agricultural tractor. All diesels for the 580 were 188 CID.

Another question. in reply to Roger (Mi), 04-21-2008 01:36:47
Hi
If the 580 came w/ 159 gas & 188 D, will the 188D replace the 159 ie same bolt patterns bell housing etc. Can"t find any 530/40/70 tractors at all but I do know where there"s a 188D engine for sale.

Thanks

C.

you need to make sure where the oil filter mounts early 188 were standing upright this makes the mounting of the power steering pump with tank not work and there was a 188 gas and a 201 gas unit also

Yes, gas and diesel are interchangeable, but... in reply to C., 04-21-2008 15:55:38
The diesel is slightly longer than the gasoline engine. You would need to work around some problems i.e. hood, throttle linkage, fuel lines, diesel return line to tank, steering shaft, etc.
