As many know Alan Golden and I have been working on the hyd brakes on our LAs. I thought some might be interested in my progress. This battle starts about a week and a half or two ago. I made a nice puller for this project out of a piece of my LA's old junk drawbar and a 1" piece of finethread all thread and two Grade 8 3/4" puller bolts I put this setup on the right hub I just started to put some tension on it and wala the hub moved! Wow I was suprised but it did look like this hub had been off at some point so I supposed that that was why it came off so easy. I put a new wheel cyl in and had it back together in an hour or so. I was feelin pretty good cause all was goin well so I started on the left side. It looked like this side had never been apart since the factory so I thought it just might be a bit tighter BOY WAS I EVER RIGHT ON THAT ONE! It put some tension on it and it no moveo. More tension no moveo. Use 1" tire gun spit drawbar puller in half still no movo. Humm so drawbar steel is hard but brittle. I think well no worries I'll just have to use some heat. make new puller out of more drawbar use two rosebuds, puller is bending and still no moveo. Darn well I'll leave the puller on and drive around, still no moveo Crud well I'm out of time so drive it back in to the shop and park it. To busy the next week and a half with work so I just squirt the heck out of it with rust penitrant every time I walk by and still no moveo. Last night I made yet another puller out of two pieces of the drawbar sandwiched together for a total thickness of over 4" of solid steel. Put this on and tighten down with 1" tire gun and apply rosebud heat 4" of steel is bending tire gun is out of umph and still no moveo. Wow this is gettin really fruserating. Drive tractor all over farm with puller on and up and down hills in such a way as to put lots of side load on hub still no moveo. Bring back into shop get 3/4" ratchet with 8' cheater and put more tension until 1" pusher bolt is bending! Still no moveo! Go home very frusterated. This eveing I try to take tractor on one more spin with the added tension. Drive 300 feet and KERPOW! I HAVE WON! The hub is loose but now I'm out of time to work on it until Tuesday night so hopfully the rest of the project should go fairly easy. Hope this is a bit helpfull to anybody trying to tackle this project. It is dificult but with enough perserverance you will win.

Having pulled one before I told you that they come off hard. Next time remove tire and wheel and block tractor with cribbing. Then add pressure and hit is with a large 12 to 20 lbs hammer. The shock will most likely get them loose. Be sure that you have the nut in place and only about 1/16 backed off you don't want that thing in your lap.

Yep Walt if driving the tractor would not have worked that was goin to be my next move. I forgot to mention that I had tried using a sledge several times but the only sledge that I have is a 8 pounder so I was going to try and round up a 20 or 30 pounder but since driving the tractor worked that saved me the effort. Plus with the tire and wheel still on it is pretty easy to craddle it with our forklift with a strap around the top to keep everything upright.

Patience is a real virtue when working on old tractors and looking for parts.

Occasionally, I have to work on that virtue.

Thanks for the update. All useful information. I have my Dad's '49 LA, it needs brake work and has for the last 45 years. It's restoration is on the to-do list. It has one of the axle nuts only part way on and has been that way since the early 60's when Dad tried to get the wheel off to service the brakes. Hasn't budged yet.

Combine,I sure wish you were closer,I would haul my "LA" to you and have you "do your thing" to my 49.
Why did Case mess with good brakes and put these in??

Ya'll are more than welcome to come to Okla and help me with mine. I've got to have mine put back together before the 28th. Our show in Pawnee begins that following weekend.
