Like Combinekid, I have started the process of working on the hydraulic brakes on my 49 LA. Yesterday, I got the weight and wheel off the right side. Borrowed a puller bar from a local machine shop. Bought bolts to put in the hub and to pull against. No luck. Heated with a rosebud. Still no luck. Left tension on it last night and came in muttering to myself.

Today, I got 2 new grade 8 bolts to put in the hub, (grade 5 3/4 bolts are now stetched to 9/16th and about an inch longer), put tension on it again, and zippo. Banged with sledge, more pressure, more heat and bupkiss. Went to lunch and had the waitress ask me if someone in my family just died. Went back, tried again. Got a buddy of mine to come over that weighs a lot more than me and he stood on the cheater pipe I'd put on the breakover and WHAM. His butt hit the ground, but the hub moved! YAY!!!! Finally got the durn thing off, found my brakes shoes in great shape, the drum is good, and the best part - I can save the wheel cylinder! Tomorrow, I will work on getting a kit to put in.

I hope the left side goes a whole lot easier when I start on it.

I have not ever pulled the hub on a LA but have pulled a lot of motor grader wheels like the LA. I always used a knocker. Take a nut like the one that holds the wheel on the axle and welded a heavy shaft on it. Screw it on the axle tight and jack the opposite wheel up off the ground and get a big sledge hammer and hit the nut with the shaft welded to it. This seemed a lot better than a puller for me. Try it see if it will work better.

Yeah Alan as I"m sure you know from my e-mail I feel your frustrations. I still have not got the one off the left side. But I have not had time to work on it the last two days either. I have the puller on it with pressure on and I like you walk by it and mutter when I still see the gap inbetween the hub and loosened nut. Each time I look at it sitting there I grap the closest can of Pb blaster, crc freezeoff, WD-40 and squirt the living heck out off it and walk away. I WILL WIN THOUGH!!!!!

Set the puller to the max plus 5 %. Heat it to the max plus 3 percent, whip 10 gallons of COLD COLD water on the hub ...and hit it like ole John Henry from the back. And then write a ballot song for J Cash to sing.

It is the rare day that I get home without having some kind of bruise, scrape, or cut.
