picked up my rebuilt starter and generator yesterday and the boys at the shop warned me the case is a positive ground.i have all the shop and mechanics manuals and yet there is nothing in there about the ground.does anyone know why the ground is reversed, mechanic said the only way he knew was because of the numbers on the starter and generator.case factory gave me a electrical schematic a while back and it shows a negative ground.im finding out why the mechanic gets big bucks.

My tractor had been changed from positive negative to negative negative. Got manuel on my case and it said positive to negative and this confussed the you know what out of me. So someone told me to check the wires. Like the coil had + to positive side of battery. The other wiring was the same. So this ment leave it alone and it's fine.

all 6 volt systems are pos. ground.this is done to reduce outer cyl. sleeve pitting from the coolant.this is another story in itself.when things come from the factory theres a reason they do what they do. i dont see any problem with 6 volt systems. the only problem is if they are not maintained properly thats why every one bitches about 6 volt.those old engines start pretty dam easy.

I will have to correct you about all 6 volt systems being positive ground. All Case tractors built in the Racine Plant used negative ground, regardless of voltage. All Rock Island tractors used positive ground... Gene

You can set the system up either way. The original system was "negative" ground. Are you using a voltage regulator with the generator or just a cut-out relay? Some voltage regulators are set up for negative ground and others for positive ground. If it matters, there should be a tag on the regulator.

Starter doesn't care about +or -, neither does generator (must be "polarized" to charge in either direction). Search for directions on polarizing on this site.
