I have a David Brown 885 dsl with front end loader and rear three point. I was using the box blade last year when the rear hydraulics quit working properly. Symptoms: When the engine is above idle it feels like the three point is trying to lift however, the controls are stationary (The engine feels and sounds like it is loaded). If the lift and lower control is moved, the rear lift will move, but, it jerks violently up or down depending on which way you tell it to go. If you tell it up, it jerks violently up and the same for down. The load on the engine is relieved momentarily when the lift moves. When the lift is stationary the load returns to the engine. The front-end loader works fine regardless of the rear lift's behavior. Shortly before it started acting up I was messing with the lift speed control trying to get it to go a bit slower. I attempted to move the "three mode selector switch" to achieve a different lifting result but it acts the same in all three positions. I have removed the seat, front end loader for access to the tractor body. I am in the process of cleaning the rear end casing so I can tear into the hydraulic modules and repair, wondering if I should purchase the $186 Case shop manual? Also, when I removed the seat after running the engine briefly, I could see some hydraulic fluid leaking up thru one of the bolts on the cover of the take off unit. Please advise.

Hi, we also have a David Brown 885. We had a similar problem that our linkage arms would raise but when loaded would bounce up and down. We have drained all oils and replaced the filter in the pan of the transmission, this slightly helped. We also replaced the o-ring seals on the hydraulic piston thinking this was the fault, not so. I also would be interested in hearing the thoughts of experienced David Brown owners about the fault of the linkage arms bouncing up and down as it must be a common fault. Regards, Shane.

Thank you for the information. There was a problem about this addressed in the forum a couple of years ago you could read about. The gentilman seemed to believe it was his control valve that was giving him the problem. He said he was going to persue repairing or replacing the control valve. He never responded back to confirm the control valve was the problem.

I purchased an IT manual on the 885. The manual reads that if the control poppet valves are damaged they can not be reworked and the entire control valve unit must be replace. The IT manual gives detailed instructions on how to disassemble the control valve and inspect for damage and wear. I am in the process of examining mine to determine if it may be the problem.

Hello, we also purchased the IT manual. I had been speaking with a David Brown mechanic who told me the fault was a loss of pressure and the system then adds more pressure to compensate, causing the up down motion. We removed the external 2 way control valve and replaced the o-rings, we also removed and resealed most of the pressure pipes/gallery. This has transformed the tractor. The load holds steady and the linkage will travel up and down smoothly. I would check everything you can with o-rings and replace them first, the mechanic also said the internal pipes can have a pin hole causing the same fault. Much cheaper to repair than the control valve.

Did your mechanic recommed a way to test the pressure piping for a pin hole leak?
