I am in the prosses of restoring a 500 case. I am at a crossroad, Should I try rebuilding the original 377 which has two bad cylinders due to water. Or should I look for a much more common 401 engine which parts are more available??? Will parts like cylinder heads, crank, rods interchange between the two?

377 block can be bored to receive 930 sleeve and pistons there are aftermarket kits avalable that increase bore from 41/8 to 41/4 making 426 c.i.d.

Thanks guys. My engine is in rough shape. The Injection pump is beyond repair and would like to overhaul it but engine parts such as sleeves and pistons are almost impossible to find. Can I put 401 sleeves and pistons in a 377 block?

Thad is right on about needing parts from the chain drive 930. The crankshafts in the 500,600, 900 and 6 spd 930 had the oil passage to bring oil back to the wet clutch, whereas the later 30 series cranks didn't have this provision.

My opinion is it depends on how much you want to spend. If you went to the 401 you will have to find one from the 930 with the chain drive rearend as they have the same bolt pattern as your 500. Mel is correct about some of the 401s haveing a diffrent bolt pattern. So you will have to be carefull and only get a six speed block. The heads from a hundred series wont fit a 30s block. Do you know if your inj pump on the 500 is any good? I would evaluate the 500 and see what you would have to spend on it. Then i would look for a running 401 and its cost. Then make my descion. Dont forget about the work of changing the engine in your cost figure. But if you are like me i work cheap and dont pay myself much. Good luck Thad

The 500-600-900 used a different bell housing bolt pattern than the later 30-70 series blocks also the 00 series used a deep setback to the crank flange. mEl
