I have a Case 310B with Dual Range and Shuttle Shift. Ever since I got it, the left brake locks up and skid the wheel with even light application. The wheel seems to stay locked until you come to a complete stop and then the tractor will move again.

This weekend I pulled both left and right brakes and they look almost new with only a slight bit of scum on one side and very light rust on the other.

I thought I remember reading a post about possibly a differential problem ?? Sure could use some advice and help. Thanks

I had a similar problem on one side of a 1959 210B. The problem was rust had formed on the metal disk sandwiched between the brake linings, spreading the linings, affecting the clearance. It would roll backward but not forward.

I've also heard of people going up 1/32 of an inch in ball size, to compensate for worn parts.

Have the same problem on the 430 , Not Sure if a oil leak may cause this , It seems to me that water or moisture is the culprit , . To date I have not turned a wrench on it , The more I use the tractor the Less likely the problem , Hope to hear from others with a SOLUTION, Best wishes , Jim

Jim from experience on my 630 an oil leak causes just the opposite, no brakes. Got one side fixed with good brakes but still chasing a leak on the right side.

This is a common brake problem. Is there a spring on the brake rod to pull it back once the brake pedal is released? Are the metal balls and ball pockets rusted?

Thanks for the reply. The balls don't seem rusted or otherwise broken, out of place etc. Both pedals had the very heavy return springs still intact.

Since the brake lining is not too thin, which allows the balls to come out of the pockets too far. I would clean and polish the balls and pockets and try it again. I have replaced rusted balls with hardened stainless steel ones. Someone else may have some ideas?

Frustrated VAC-14

Re: VAC-14 Brake Problem in reply to C. Amick, 03-17-2008 11:58:56
I recently bought a VAC-14 and am trying to work out the bugs. The latest is a grunting noise coming from the right brake caused by the right brake not releasing. Occasionally it will, but one consistent problem is, while in reverse, the right brake petal will "jump up and down" when applied, like something is catching.

Secondly, this VAC-14 is 12 volt. My battery tests OK, but seems to not want to turn the tractor over very well. It has 425 CCA. How many CCAs should I have, and is there a more serious problem?

Any ideas/suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Thanks so much.

Could be a lot of rust built up in the brake if it has been sitting outside. It may just need a good cleaning. You will have to pull it off to know for sure what the problem is. That 12 volt battery should make your 6-volt starter zing. Does it still have the old 6-volt starter on it? The 6-volt should work fine. Clean your battery ground wire connection at the tractor body and the cable connection at the starter. Does it have the old push-type starter button? Sometimes they can get corroded up.
