I have the oil to change it, and was wondering, do I need to take off the side cover on the oil pan and look at the filter?

I have never done it, (first time changing oil on tractor) if you guys think I should, can I use silicone to make a gasket for the cover to put it back on?

Thanks!

I'm with Jgarner, silicon ( commonly known as smurf snot ) is for your bathroom , it is tub and tile sealer and does not belong in an engine. I have had to repair the main bearing bore and line bore blocks because some clown used too much of it.I have found pieces in piston coolers ,with scoured pistons and sleeves , also blocked passages in oil coolers. If you can see the silicon squeeze out on the outside ,you can bet it squeezed out on the inside and with all the turbulance on the inside it will tear off and go in places that you don't want it.

How is the manifold working ? george

Do your self a favor and throw that tube of silicon away. I have a 630 that someone did this on to "substitute" for nearly all of the gaskets on parts I have taken apart on it. In my experience it does not seal well, flakes off into every internal cavity you have used it on and plugs up filters.

Go to you local auto parts store and buy a roll of gasket material (its big and costs less than $2.00), take a sharp utility knife and CUT new gaskets. Either that or buy new gaskets from Case or John Saeli if you are not comfortable with cutting your own.

If you suspect that the oil hasn't been changed in a looooong time, then I'd remove & clean the oil pump screen. It's behind the triangle bolt pattern plate, not the rectangular one. If you are careful, & the gasket is fairly new, it is reusable, other wise clean everything to get all the oil off & use a little "blue glue", it doesn't take much. (If you put too much on, it can get into the crank case & plug passages up.) Don't forget to drain the clutch sump, it'll refill as soon as you start the engine. If it has a filter, it'll be external, behind the mag, some SC's did not come with a filter. (My $0.02 worth. jal-SD)
