Is there a timing mark on a 48 model SC? If so where is it? I hve looked on the flywheel and front pullies and I can't find one. My Tractor has a distributor on it that some one has put on and My IT manual only talks about Mag's. I know they came out with mags.
Bottom Line how do I time it BY Marks???or by ear?

If you want to time by lite, put a pointer on the front timing cover and mark the front pulley with the mark in the timing hole, then use an advance type timing light to determine running timing, thats how it do all my competetion engines. As long as the engine is running the oil on the flywheel will make running timing very difficult, the pointer makes it a snap. mEl

Once I get the timing close, I will either hook a load to it or do a hill climb to get it tweaked for maximum pulling power.

There should be a timing mark on the flywheel visible through the plug behind and below the starter, it will be hard to find unless you keep the flywheel clean as you turn it. If it is like a DC , drain the clutch housing to keep oil from getting on the flywheel as it turns, take out #1 plug and have someone help you find when compression starts to build on #1 cylinder, when you feel compression building against your finger go slow. You are looking for a D or TDC, a DC has a (D) just like that , in parenthesis. when you get close you can carefully use a screwdriver to feel the top of the piston but be carefulso you don't bind it as the piston comes up. mEl

mEL is right about the mark on the flywheel being a bit hard to see....The must have had the 98 pound weakling doing the stamping.

It is easier to do this turning the motor over with the belt pulley as you can work the wrench turning the pulley and watch for the timing mark at the same time. (and go back a bit if you over shoot...can't do that with the hand crank) It is also a great excuse to buy a 1-13/16 socket (that fits the belt pulley nut) as some day you will probably have to replace the belt pulley seal.
