Joe,

What does the "Steering backlash adjustment screw" do?

I never even knew it was there.

Factory recommend oil is SAE 10W, SAE30W or type A ATF.

The viscosty of the motor oil will pend ambient temp.

There is nothing special about the hydraulic system. Spur gear pump and some spool valves. You need a good quality low viscosty oil. The drive shaft roller bearings, (gear train and clutch pack if installed) don't require any special lube.

Some people use SAE 10W30 year around. I use a general purpose hydraulic oil mainly for the anti-foaming additive, not a big deal, all quality oils have some.

Alan, just saw your questions on page 2 or 3. Have slow dail-up seldom go there, ya about have to ask on page 1 for most of us slooooo oow guys.

For the oil bath air cleaner use the same oil as your engine crankcase. Factory engine oil was SAE 10W, 20W, 30W pending ambient temp. SAE 10W30 is fine.

While you have the air intake cup off, check the steering gear box oil level. SAE 140 is best, SAE 90 in a pinch but might leak out the old seals.

Fill to top of worm gear, make sure fill plug is drilled for vent hole. Here are a couple pixs, just changed my steering lever pins.

I unwound one, soaked it in mineral spirits and blew it out with compressed air. Time consuming but worked out ok.

Don't know about the steel wool fillers. They sell them on this site. YT is really super to work with on parts.
