Would someone be kind enough to explain to me about a wet clutch? I have a 1939 Case RC tractor that has a wet clutch in it but I really don’t understand what it is. What is the purpose of a wet clutch? I have read some stuff on it, but my main question is where does the oil come from and how much is supposed to be in there. If it comes from the engine, how does the engine build oil pressure? Does the oil come from the engine? Do I need to add oil into the clutch housing? Please help explain this mystery to a young and very inexperienced tractor restorer. Thanks Micah

The bell housing should have a drain plug on it so you can drain the dirty oil out of it when you change the engine oil. You only add oil to the engine, any excess oil in the bell housing drains back to the engine oil pan. It's more durable than a dry type clutch.

rear of crankshaft is drilled allowing a small amount of pressure oil into clutch housing, clutch and flywheel sling oil around and a small trough in casting catches oil and most drains back into crankcase leaving less than 1 qt. in bell housing.

First thing to remember is these were early in use of tractors. The wet clutch is a lot more forgiving of slipping and other abuse from inexperienced operators. Same idea with hand clutch; operators used to hand reins to make horse/mule go & stop, push lever forward to go,pull back to stop. Unless clutch was "snapped" over center to engage,operator could get off and adjust,etc. without taking out of gear or machine jumping out from under him with a slip off foot clutch. Rear of crankcase is open to clutch uses engine oil, seperate drain for clutch housing. Open inspection/adjustment plate and flush clutch housing with diesel to get sediment out,fill engine with oil to top drain run engine, check oil level. clutch should be self filled.
