Got a 990 to try out 1968 model, 12 speed. Think it went through a fire, but has been repainted. Moved a few round bales with it and it seems fine. Little moan from the finals, but I haven't changed fluids. Wiring cut and fried, power steering a little weak at idle and standing still. Needs a sniff of ether at 25F to start. Rear 90%, front about bald. 4300+ hours on the non functional hourmeter. New seat!

Did these have a 540 and 1000 rpm pto? Seems like it does from what I see. For $2500.00 it seems like what I want. A couple hundred in fixin's and it should be ok. Any opinions?

My brother and I inherited our fathers 990 that was sitting in a field for 15+ years.(thanks dad) we remember the tractor as being the do all little tractor for our modest farm. Instead of restoring that one I found another that was in great condition and we use the other for a parts tractor. Two speed pto and the hydraulics work great as long as you remember to keep the filters clean. No issues with the finals whatsoever. Good on fuel and versitile. we've transformed mine into a pulling tractor, picture is in the photo gallery. We learned at a very early age that you need to take care in maintaining equipment and it will last a lifetime or more. We love the "browns" as we call them. Mine too needs thermostat and every other gauge but the tach. Good luck with your project I will be interested in the progress. Do you have the loader for it? We do and will part with it if you are interested.

Well the 990 is working out so far. Thought I'd pass along this tip. My tractor doesn't have the thermostart, and ether isn't something I want to use for obvious reasons. A guy from New Brunswick recommended I try pulling the big plug on the intake and sticking a torch in there for a minute to warm things up. I used a propane torch and once I got the hand of where to hold it it works like a dream! The block heater is coming, but for now this works fine. :D

Parts are no more pricy than any other tractor. Bought anything blue lately?
You need to learn about the Thermostart, and either use it, or disconnect it if you are using ether.
Great tractors, do a search here for most anything has been discussed before. Does the 3pt work like it should?

Yes, the 3 pt works fine. I'm not familiar with the thermostart. The manual I have id for an older model I think and doesn't mention the thermostart or 2 speed PTO. COuld you clue me in please?

I have a 1964 880e, very simillar tractor. I changed the fluids in mine and it still has a wine from the finals, but I think this is par for David Browns, at least from everything I've read. Mine will start with no assistance down to about freezing, after that I plug the in-line heater in, wait 1/2 an hour or so and she fires right up. Your power steering issue could be a weak pump, or just need a good cleaning and fluid flush. They're great tractors, run strong, easy on fuel, are underpriced for their size. Parts are fairly easy to come by. I order filters and such from the local CASE dealer.

Parts can be pricey but you can get them. But also, parts for all tractors are pricey. I have 18 DB's and can get parts for most all of them.

2 speed pto was always standard on a Brown. Solid little tractor, no major issues with them, but parts may be getting pricey so check out before you buy.
