I would like to convert a 730lp to run off homemade ethanol. I have a carb that should work on the 730. Can anyone give me some practical advice on converting over. Does it harm the engine?

How about a DO (tractor fuel) in reply to vacnewbie, 03-04-2008 03:26:03
Would a DO that ran on tractor fuel be a better fit?
To answer the other Qs...Haven't started making fuel, just noodling the idea. The ability to grow your own fuel is interesting. I'm in Florida and have excess fruit year round...also could grow sugar cane if needed...Wanted to do it more for the knowledge/novelty rather than running a tractor all day every day...

the key to it all is tuning &tinkering. The higer the compression ratio the more efficent it will be . Also what type of still do you plan on using????pot stills don't usually give a pure enough product to give good results for motorfuel they reccomend a fractional distiller that will produce 90% or better 180 proof as the remaining 10 % is usually water and more water means richer fuel mixture and more fuel. I would reccomend doinga search for the David brown Alcohol fuel handbook/website and ask some honestquestions. Also , you mite have to change oil a little more often , as if any fuel gets in the oil due to blow-by it turns the oil milky, and it will attract moisture.....Shawn

yes it should work , but it would help if the compression ratio was about 12:1 ...it will also use TWICE the fuel Methanol/ethanol burns at a 7:1 fuel to air , gas is 14:1. It will be hard to start, especially with the up-draft carb. Also remove ALL RUBBER from your fuel delivery system.good luck let us know how it works Shawn

We did this to some old Chevy Luvs back in the early 80s you have to take the carb apart and have it nickel plated then bore out all the jets (you need to get the size for these) then add a very large fuel tank as it will burn tons of fuel as compared to gasoline or LP but it can be done at a price.
Walt PS it ain't easy and you will need to get all the information on the conversion before starting you will burn 3 to 4 time the amount of fuel as compared to gasoline.

Should work, the LP was higher compression(good for Ethanol). Make sure the carb can deliver enough fuel, maybe an 830/930 carb: Ethanol likes about 14:1 air fuel ratio, gas 17:1, LP 20:1. Timing might be able to be advanced. Watch temp guage eth. burns hot. Might be harder starting in the cold, for sure the oil will get dirtier.

If you are thinking of something like the E85 that is available at some stations now, I do not think the 730 carb. will work. I do not think that it will open up enough to allow enough fuel in. It will take 20 to 30% more gallons / hour to get the same HP. I have a 730 gas that I run on 10%, the carb is wide open and it is still the most cold blooded tractor on the place. Let us know how it works. Do you have your own still? How many gallons can you produce? What are you making it from? DK

Are you talking about Ethanol Gas, or Bio Deisel? There is a differents between the two. If you are talking about Ethenol Gas, I dident know you could make it at home.

Moonshine whiskey is ethanol. Sure you can make it at home... Gene
