Hi everyone,
I have my basket case 1030 together and I am having a real problem with starting. I had the injectors rebuilt and the pump checked out and the injection repair place said it was fine and they turned it up 20%. I have everything in time and I can start the tractor on either and it runs really rough for several minutes. If I play with the throttle lever then the engine evens out and runs really well. Does any one have any ideas as to what to look for or do you think I need the pump looked at again. I have it timed at 32% btdc I found that in one of the service manuals I had. It also seems to smoke a little excessively like it is not burning all of the fuel. Any help is appreciated.

I took the pump off and took it to the pump repair shop to check out. I will be out of town until saturday. It should be at my house when I get home. I will let you know if there was anything wrong in the pump.

Mel, If the pump was off 180 would it rev up like it should if it was in time? It revs fine just like it should it was somewhere between 40 and 50 degrees in temperature when I was trying to start it.

Thanks

If it ran clean at full throttle it is not likely that it is 180 out, try retarding the timing a little, also as posted previously the dampeners are mounted on a rubber ring that can separate and allow the outer ring with the marks on it to move making your timing marks useless. you could take the valve cover off and use number 1 intake valve at tdc. Remove the rockers, remove the spring and let the valve down on top of the piston, use a dial indicator to carefully find TDC then compare to the damper marks, it would be a good idea to put a spring loaded closepin on the valve stem or something to keep from dropping the valve just in case you make a mistake. mEl

You have gotten advise from very knogeable folks in previous posts. I too have same thing happen on my origional 830 an used 93 . Ihave learned to live with it. 830new did not miss a lick when new even when cold but started harder after heads were pulled many years ago. aI just started 930 yesterday an it skips so i just give it a sniff of eather to get all cylinders firing .You didnt say how cold outside air was when you started. Also have you had injectors checked an set properly. ALSO i have often wondered if little trans fer pump is making proper pressure supplying pump with fuel therby keeping injector plungers full of fuel also could fuel be leaking out of system an allowing small amount of air between pump an transfer pump while not running.Mine run extremely smooth after warm up as Case is suppose to do.Do know that compression has to be 500+psi i think at cranking speed -i950psi on injector before cracking so some where on a cylinder that is not hapening. Finally i am getting old an dont always know what is wrong with me eighter. ha ha

It's possible that the timing marks on crank pulley have shifted/moved due to outer part of pulley being mounted on rubber. You will have to make sure #1 piston is physically on top dead when timing pointer indicates same.

I know you said you have it in time. But i would double check sounds to me like its a 180 out of time. I have done this before myself and thought i had it in time. They will run a 180 out but they will smoke be hard to start and be real lazy to rev up. Keep us posted. Thad

Thad, before others question that the engine will run 180 out, I'd like to say you are right as I have had it happen in our shop, an 830 diesel!! Verify TDC on #1 by watching the intake valve on #5,--- as it is closing #1 is coming to TDC on the compression stroke. Good luck , post back, let us know how you make out. mEl
