There is a band around one disc and that disc is not driven by the tranny. The other disc is driven by the tranny when you press the brake pedal it stops the undriven disc. These two disc's are held together by two stiff springs and they have four steel balls in the middle that set in elongated cups, so when one disc is stopped it causes the discs to expand against the tranny housing and the brake housing. If the brake pads are worn enough then it will allow the steel balls to get in a bind in the elogated cups causing the brake to stick. Usually a new set of pads riveted on will solve the problem unless the housing is worn to much. Hope this helps

I'm not sure but doesn't the 580 have disk brakes on the side of the tranny frame. If so its easy to remove and clean them you most likely have brake fluid on the disk.

Broken parts or rust... in reply to RAY BERG, 02-25-2008 20:35:23
There are springs that retract the brake bands and disks. They are likely weak or broken. Rust will cause the same problem. You'll need to disassemble, inspect, replace, and clean.

I second this one, those srpings that retract the shoes or a buildup of grease and gunk holding the shoes too close the disk assembly
