Ok I have a quick question that I hope somone can answer. I had a few minutes this evening to work on my tractor, so I was trying to set my magneto in the correct position for installation on my tractor. I tried to follow the procedure in my opperators manual but it is a bit confusing. I know that you want to hold the impulse lever at the positon were it sparks on #1. I made a tool that is sort of like the one shown in the manual for holding it. But my question is as follows. Do you want to hold it in positon directly befor it trips on #1 or dirictly after? The wording in the manual is kinda not clear on this. Thanks a bunch

I always bring the engine up to the compression stroke on number one cyl then back it off to mid stroke, fire the mag on number one and then back it back so it is ready to fire number one again, but going back to mid stroke you don"t have to fight the impulse spring,no special holders, etc just put it on. If you try to do it at TDC you have to fight the full tension of the impulse spring. not smart, but I have changed many over the years and have it down. hope this helps. mEl

I have a D series dealer's service manual. It shows placing mag gently in vise. have spark wire in no 1 hole on mag. Hold wire one eight of an inch from frame of mag. Turn the impulse with wrench until spark jumps between the wire and the frame. Use care to hold the wrench and mag firmly so impluse will not move beyond the point where it trips and spark occurs. The position at which the spark occurs indicates the approximate setting of the magneto for firing of no. 1 cylinder.
