Previously I asked a question about an engine block I wanted to use to replace a cracked block on my 1950 SC. Finding out I could use the block I proceeded to get it ready to swap. In cleaning it I noticed #4 sleeve bore badly pitted, and it was rusted so badly it pulled a piece of bottom seal groove with it when sleeve was pulled out. Wall on sleeve was only .055in. thick so it is good I didn't pay to get it bored out. Now, I have more questions. I bought another block, this one is empty, no guts at all just main caps but absolutely beautiful. After getting it home and cleaned real good, I noticed some subtle differences on this block compared to the other two I have. Finding the s/n I found it to be from 1941. No spot for the oil filter, shorter external webs etc. I need to know now if all the parts from my 1950 engine will fit this block and if so what about the oil filter? Did the 1941 models even have one? Some day I'll learn to look more closely. Sorry for being so long winded. Allan.

All your internal parts will fit the 1941 block. The 1941 blocks did not have an oil filter provision for attaching it to the block. You will have to improvise. My '42 is the same way. It has a plate attached to the battery tray that the oil filter attaches to. The very first SC's made had no webbing on the block. The webbing differences you describe have no effect on whether the engine will fit or not. If you want it like your old one, you will have to find ANOTHER block.

The block is too nice not to use. I"ve found the tractor is a 1950 with a 1947 SE engine in it and I was trying to use a 1949 sc engine (the one I broke), so the 1941 engine seems destined to go on this machine. It will be no problem making a bracket to mount the filter, question is where to connect the return line? Since the SC will probably spend the rest of her days as a barn queen, do you think it even needs a filter if the oil is changed very fpequently? Thanks very much to L.Lamp for the reply!

My '42 SC has the filter return line going into the oil fill area. A 1/8" pipe fitting is taped into this area and a hose from your filter connects them together. My '44 pulling SC tractor does not have a filter and I am not going to put one on so I can keep the weight down. The filter input can be acquired from the same source as your '49. If you don't use it that much, you probably don't need one.
