I have an old case 831 I am trying to get running. The other day I had to move it arround the yard, and when I went to pull it the rear left axle would not turn at all. I was just wondering if anyone had any ideas what could be froze up inside of the rear end or trans. Thanks

Thanks all, I will check the drain plug for water, and check that brake to see if it is seized. Thanks again.

When i went pick up my 48dc the back wheels would not turn. WE had to use a floor jack to get on trailer by the way it was 20 below when picked up. After we got it home and in garage we let it warm up about 4days. I drain 5 gallons of water out put fresh oil in rearend and to this day have had no trouble. Hope this help.

As an FYI to all you folks in Nothern climates, as I have been working on my 630 I have had the need to drain the case and put new gear lube in. The first time I drained the original lube from it when I was chasing a seal leak I got about 3-4 gallons, yes gallons of water out of mine. Each time there after when I started to pull the plug I would get 2-3 table spoons out over a period of maybe 3-4 months so you can imagine what many years might be.

If you back the drain plug out until you have maybe 1-2 threads engaged the water will come through the tapered pipe threads but the thick oil won't.

My guess is that you have enough condensation water in the case and are in a cold climate and it is frozen as suggested earlier. I plan to periodically check mine to bleed the water out now that I have discovered this. BTW the tractor is store in a garage, not outside where it would get rained on.
