Hi. I've found an 801b w COM for sale and was hoping to get some info from some Case Experts. I'm hoping to go look at it in a few weeks, it's about 5 hrs from me. It's an 1959 801b according to the nameplate and SN however the hood says 830? The guy selling it traded for it and said the previous owner was pulling a disc with it last year. It has a new battery, water pump, new(repaired) radiator and new belts. Seller says the only thing he can find wrong with it is the PTO won't shut off. Could this be a major problem or maybe something as simple as a linkage problem? The eagle hitch works good and it has remotes.Other than that he doesn't know much about it. I guess my question is what do I look for? How do I know the COM is working properly? Could the PTO problem be easily fixed? Oh by the way he wants 2500 for it. Is that to much? HELP!! Thanks

TVB,
I have the same tractor and love it.I paid more then 2500.00 for mine. You get alot of tractor for the money.I have two 830's one the pto spins whether its engaged or not and the other doesn't.
If it doesn't appear to be worked hard it sounds pretty good to me.

I confused the Pto has no brake? Does that mean it's always on? I hope I'm misunderstanding, that wouldn't make much sense, how would you road equipment?

The PTO has a wet clutch with multiple disks that is prone to "drag" from the fluid movement. So if the PTO clutch is adjusted correctly, it is not on all the time, but will turn if nothing is hooked on to it to stop it, or if the pto brake is not working.
Case started using a pto brake on the 400 Super in 1957, so I would be very surprised if this newer model, which is updated from the 400, doesn't have the pto brake. If it does, it sounds like yours is out of adjustment.

CORRECT , PRONE TO DRAG FROM FLUID MOVEMENT,.. Usually You can stop with a firm hand grip ,When near perfect adjustment ,,,BEST TO SHUT OFF MOTOR AND HOOK UP PTO ,,Standard procedure here for All 52 thru 55 DC,Sc with live power And both 800's ,and My brothers 400 . Sure would like to know how to adjust PTO brake ,, I have understood WERE NON EXISTANT on above mentioned tractors .. PTO clutch under heavy trying use ,, BUSHHOGGING will probably need to be adjusted couple times per year , Been told to Use Best to Use Dexron 3 fluid , My Experience it has improved awell disengaged clutch that seems not to need adjusting as often as those with standard fluid ,, Guys What is YOUR FINDINGS < >thanx Jim

Sounds like someone already spent some $ on it. I would look over the "replaced" items well to make sure they were new/repaired. 2500 seems a little high. As far as the amount of tractor you get its probably worth that much or more but they"re not bringing much on the market. It should be in pretty good shape for that much money as others have said. On the COM. check the fluid for level & to see if its burnt/hot. watch the pressure gage. it should stay be in the green zone. Make sure the lines to the radiator are hooked up, i"ve seen a couple tractors where they by-passed them. When driving you"ll want to run the tractor to get the fluid warmed up 1st. You"ll want to drive it around. Lower throttle will make it easier to shift and med-higher throttle will keep it from slipping. When shifting to direct drive you should get a definate lunge/lurch and an small increase in speed. It would be best if you could pull something like a disk. Start out in COM mode and when up to speed shift to direct drive. Things that can go wrong are pumps, seals, relief and control vavlves. Great idea and they work well when the work right. look for other things on the tractor to tell if its a 800 or 830. the SN on the side of the block flange (left side bell housing) is a good place to look as well as casting #"s on the block and heads. good luck and enjoy.

Well said J, most people who comdemn the Case o matic have never sat on the seat of one, The Case o matic must be learned and most people won't learn to use it properly. Properly cared for they were one of the most durable transmissions that Case ever made and I would bet there are thousands that have never been split for repair 50 years down the road. I love Case's power shift but the COM is more durable than that yet. I have been around them since they were introduced, tells my age I guess!!

TVB I have the same exact tractor with the 4 cyl. diesel and I 100% love it!!!! When I got it it hadn't been started in several years and I let it sit for another 2 1/2 years before I started working on it. After a minimal amount of working and a couple of hundered buck, (injector rebuilds, filters, batteries, and fuel), she fired up and ran great! She still needs paint work here in the spring but I would be very hard pressed to sell mine!

Just my $0.02.

(By the way I gave $500.00 for mine and got a set of rear rims, filters, and a spare engine that had a hole in the side of the block...)

Larry -glad you found a buyer. I just saw your e-mail about the salvage yard tonight and replied. I placed an order with that guy for the rim last weekend, but thought I would compare prices with you.

Tim
