I got a great deal on a 1958-59 case 210b gas motor and have been trying to get it started. The motor turns freely by hand but hardly cranks with the starter. I pulled the starter and it spins pretty good on the bench. When I put it back in the tractor I have to help it along by hand. It seems I am just not cranking fast enough to get it started. Any ideas?

You might try jumping it directly at the starter with another power source to see if that makes any difference. Is it 6-volt or 12-volt? If 6-volt, could the cables be too small?

just a thought, have you checked the ground? had a VA case that would not give a good ground through the torque tube ran a cable from battery to the starter and fixed the problem

Wouldn"t hurt to have an auto electric shop look at the starter. There"s a big difference between spinning on the bench and driving an engine. Even though it might spin great on the bench, if the windings are shorted, it"ll hardly have enough torque to turn an engine. I know I got my starter to turn a lot faster just by cleaning up the shaft bushings and re-oiling the wicks on the bushings at either end.
