I bought a 2870 that was just delivered the other day. My manuals are ordered but I just can't wait to find out a few things (you know, kid with new toy).

The first one is the steering. The front cables are broken so I am sure that the steering is not working properly. My question is how does the steering work if set up properly.
I'm guessing that when you have the "Rear Steering" lever to the right in "Manual" that you just set the rear wheels where you want them and then leave them there.

I'm hoping that when you set the "Rear Steering" lever to "Auto" that the fronts and rears work together for true four wheel cornering. Am I close?

I'm also wondering how many wedges there are supposed to be holding on each wheel. Looks to me like there were originally 15, 5 on the inside and 10 on the outside. Could have been 20, 10 inside and 10 outside. Anyway I think that I am short a few. Any place to get them cheap or does anybody have a way to fab some up easily?

Thanks,

JP.

Thanks guys.

Well, I took off the bad steering cables, I think that I'm going to have to spring for new ones at $250 each. I can't see any way of repairing them.

I don't know what to think about the wedges. Three wheels have 15 each and the other has 12. There was one extra in the cab. So I have 58 wedges. There are all different kinds of 3/4" bolts holding them on and not one 45* nut on the whole tractor! The PO must have been having problems keeping them on because some have jamb nuts and some have nylocks.

Jim, I must have different hubs and wheels than you because this tractor has main rims that take rim mount duals. The eye bolts are already there (on the hub) and I can see that rim mount duals have been on it before. There is no shaft to mount duals on. It looks a little scary because when I mount duals the clamps will be working side loading the main wheel wedges.

I've been to Worthington's in St Johns on an emergency trip for a clutch for our MF 2705.
Thanks

JP.

you are absolutely correct on the steering, i remember when ours was brand new, it was fun to crab the tractor steering with the manual lever, from the rear it dogtracked like crazy! In auto, it would really turn around had to be careful not to get into the toolbar ours has ten wedges on each wheel, the extra holes are staggered to allow you to move the rim rib to the ouside of the wheel to widen the track.
