It was a bit to cold today for my 830 to start.Lots of smoke, but no fire.I took a lit propane torch put it directly into the intake manfold while cranking it and she fired right away. The extra heat did the trick.

Thanks to all who helped getting my tractor going.Great site
happy new year

You can do the same thing by just lighting a piece of newspaper and letting it draw the flame into the intake. We've used this trick many times. We used it once on a Chevy Luv that wouldn't start for a guy because the glowplugs were not working. My dad told him to get in and crank it. When my dad raised the hood and lit the piece of newspaper the guy said "Hey, I want to start it; not burn it!" We got a big kick out of it and the guy got his truck running.

Back in the Old days (1959-62) we had Grey marine engines in the boats on Board the ship and they wouldn't start if it was a little bit cold. The only ether we had came in small red plastic bottles about 2 in. long there was enough to start a dozen engines but you couldn't save it because you had to cut the thing open and the rest was lost by the next time you had to start the engine. So i kept a bottle of lighter fluid on board and would put some on a rag light it and hold it next to the intake. It worked great but wouldn't want to do this on one with a paper or oil filter, boat engines just have a screen on them.

Yes, you are right on the more heat from propane. Didn't know what kind of temps you were experiencing. Took the ether for winter starts in Northwest corner of Colorado, mainfold heaters in the spring and fall, and when we brought it down to central Texas the heaters were all that was ever required. Too bad your heaters are missing they were real convienient and worked well at the right temperature ranges.

I must have a southern tractor doesn't like to stgart without help in the cold. The manifold heater is missing.I would thinks the propane would put out alot more heat.not as conveinent though.
mE1,
I ended up removing the filter and fuel lines 1 and 2 to get excess to the cover. three of the lifters where stuck and one of the plungers. It took a bit doing and a custom bent driver to get them free they where pretty tight, but freed in the end.Something to note:After I got the lifters and plungers loose I went back to the rack and it was free and loose.
Thanks again

studiediesel63 mine is a low hood eagle hitch, i don"t have the serial number handy but it has to be the same vintage as yours. as i said previously the only thing missing is the com drive. mine starts well when cold with the manifold heater and we don"t use ether on it, we plug it in , its a lot easier on it than ether. mEl

Mike, Our 830 would usually start using the manifold heaters in weather down in the low +10s(F) but required just a sniff of ether from an areosol spray can around 0 and below weather.

You are esentially doing with the propane torch what the heaters do. Do your heaters not work anymore?

bio, in the end, how did you get the rack loose, did you have to take the cover off or did it come loose by working from the end cap, anyway congrats, hope you enjoy your 830 as I do mine, the only thing that would make mine better is if it was a Case-O. Happy New Year, mEl
