so i have had this charging problem since i have owned the tractor(about 6 years) it really doesnt affect it that much as the battery has never been dead but the gen light is always on. I have had the gen rebuilt a few years ago then the light stayed off for a while. i also have put two regulator on the thing and the light stays off for a while but it always comes back on after several hour of use. I have "excited the field" using the directions on this site.. grounding the gens field post and jumping between the vr gen post and the bat terminal. then the light goes out..but when i shut off the tractor and re-start it the light is back on. when using my voltage meter i get all kinds of crazy reading any where from 12 volts up to 19 volts its always jumping around and doesnt stay constant. I am afraid if i get another vr the light will just be back on soon. the tractor had a 12 volt battery in it when i got it so that was what i put back on it soon after purchase. was wondering if it was suppose to be a 6 volt system, but the headlights and gauges work ok. any help would be great thanks in advance. all the wiring connection seem to be solid and tight.

Unless you are working with a show tractor just install a Delco alternator and be done with it.
