Gas 530 CK Backhoe Questions

Thanks in advance for your replies.

I am buying a 60's 530CK backhoe with a gas engine that is 220 miles away. I have ordered an IT manual, but I do not it yet and I have some questions as I am going to take a look at it the day after Christmas while I am in the neighborhood seeing the in laws. I have never owned a Case but I do all my work on my Allis WD45 gas 4 banger. This backhoe doesn't want to start in the cold weather and is near Chicago(supposedly it ran in early November). Does this have the 159 ci engine? What spark plugs work best and what gap do I need? How about points? Are they pretty straight forward to put in and what is the gap? I figure it can"t hurt to do the tune up. The carburetor seems to be flooding the engine as it will pop over on ether but when the gas is turned on it stalls out and smells of gas and won"t fire according to the owner. I'm not the best with carbs, but are there adjustment screws that I can turn in all the way and then back out a certain number of turns? Otherwise I thought I would pull it off, take it with me and rebuild it. If I can"t get this to go I may have to winch it onto a trailer. Any tricks to jacking the backhoe implement off the ground and can I steer this thing without the engine running as it has power steering?

Thanks for any help,

Jon

If you don't/can't get her running... and need to trailer it.... be aware that (unlike a WD-45) it's too heavy for a tandem axle car hauler. Check out the weight and capacity of the trailer first. Exact weight obviously depends mostly on which hoe and/or loader you have. Our 580CK Diesel with power shuttle, 33 loader and extend-a-bucket backhoe weigh over 15k lbs.

Also, I don't know how the hoe or loader can be lifted without running the engine. Seems the only way may be to use a jack, or jacks, while the appropriate control valve is held open to allow oil to displace in the cylinder affected.

In cold weather, steering will be next to impossible without the engine. Don't plan on turning the wheels very far.

Thanks OM for the tip about the float. That was my thought about what might be wrong with the carb. I"d appreciate you looking in the morning to see what plugs you have. Anybody else have a favorite plug? Thanks for the plug and point settings Tom. I am looking forward to getting this thing home and digging a few holes.

Jon

Takes a NGK A-6 plug. I use the NGK plugs for most everything. The worst are Champions, I've seen way to many dead on arrival.
I usually get them through the net at www.sparkplugs.com

Thanks OM - I am not a fan of Champions either and am glad to hear about the NGKs.

Merry Christmas

Jon

Got one of them critters myself...yes, 159 cu.in. motor. First thing I had to do when I got it was replace a sunk carburetor float. Will steer with engine dead but not easy. Can't remember what plugs are in it I'd have to check in the am. Good luck, they are pretty handy to have around.

Set the idle screw one turn out, set the load screw one turn out also to start with. Spark plugs set at .023 to .027" and points set at .020".
