I have a 50 model DC. I bought a magneto with a hole drilled top center on rotor cover. I'm using it like a distrubitor. The impluse still works. Would you set point gap for a distrubitor or mag?

Joe that is what I call a cobbled up mess. The mag should be removed and the shaft that was coupled up to the mag should be coupled up to the distributor. Use a 12-volt coil with 12-volt battery (negative ground). If you don"t have a 12-volt starter and you"re still trying to use the mag to start the tractor and the impulse is still working on the mag and you have distributor on top of that...you"re not giving your distributor the same amount of time on each plug like the mag does and hotter ignition...you should read up on how mag and distributor works. Not important if you have somebody helping you do the conversion. I don"t like to write too long of a letter because sometimes I get too many people confused in translation.

What's your point rwp??? in reply to rwp, 12-24-2007 08:26:00
WOW, rwp!

I guess that means several old tractors I have with gutted-out mags operating as Kettering ignitions must NOT be running well, either???

Not that I would EVER advocate butchering a GOOD mag, however, gutting out a "bad" one, and using it as a distributor DOES work, and WELL, at that!

Hello Bob, thanks for your support. I set the points on .020, started easy. What do you mean by Kettering ignitions? Joe

I have the mag coil disconnected and using a 12 v coil with internal resistor hooked up to the points and a 12 v condenser. The clicker is still working. This may not suppose to work. It starts easy and runs fine. I've been running it this way for the past 10 years.
